In the Austin area in Texas, this is a commonplace scenario the scenario. A defensive driving Austin course may take place in a traditional classroom or it may be done through any of the alternative methods like through the Internet or through a CD or DVD.

A six-hour defensive driving Austin course is required to dismiss a traffic citation. These classes are also called traffic safety or ticket dismissal classes. The Texas Education Agency has approved forty-eight different safety courses that can be conducted for the purpose of ticket dismissal. If the driver who commits a traffic violation decides to have a defensive driving Austin course in a traditional classroom, the sessions may be done either in 6 straight hours for one day or broken down into two 3-hour sessions on separate days.

So that these methods will be approved, testing and security measures would have to be in place. For these courses, the driver is asked many times personal questions about his vehicle so that his answers would be verified by third-party databases. Also, course content questions would be asked from time to time to evaluate comprehension about the topic. These questions will pop up on the screen and the driver taking the course is given thirty to sixty seconds to answer it.

The lowest price that defensive driving Austin schools can charge its clients for driving safety courses for ticket dismissal is $25. This is in accordance to Texas state laws. Defensive driving classes for the purpose of insurance discount or education may be charged less than $25. However, the certificate of completion for this class cannot be used to dismiss a traffic citation.

A driver with a Texas driver permit is allowed to have one traffic citation dismissed through defensive driving Austin classes once in every twelve months. However, for a Texas court to approve this request, certain requirements would have to be met. In these cases, the defensive driving course should be taken after the traffic violation had been committed. A completion certificate of a defensive driving Austin course may not be used as basis for dismissal of future traffic citations. If the driver has a driver license issued by another state, he may be allowed to take a defensive driving class in Texas so as to dismiss a traffic violation. However, this is upon the discretion of the assigned judge.

As of September of 2003, the Texas state has implemented a new system in determining fines and charges for drivers who had committed several traffic violations. In this system, points are assessed on the driver license of a person who has committed moving violations that are considered as Class C misdemeanors. Moreover, the Department of Public Safety will assess another charge for those who gain a six points or more on their driving record within a 3-year period. The surcharge is $100 for the first 6 points and for each extra point will be $25.
